What it means

Many of our customers pay no VAT at all

UK law lets people who are chronically sick or disabled buy certain goods, adjustable beds among them, without paying the 20 percent VAT. It is not means tested. You do not need to be registered disabled, claim any benefit, or provide a doctor's letter.

If you qualify, the VAT simply comes off your order. We handle it for you, and we keep the short declaration on file as the rules require.

Do you qualify

The simple test

You can usually claim relief if

  • You have a physical or mental impairment with a long-term and substantial effect on your everyday activities
  • You have a condition the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, such as diabetes
  • You are terminally ill
  • You are buying the bed for your own personal or domestic use

This does not include

  • Being elderly but otherwise able-bodied
  • A temporary injury, such as a broken limb
  • A short-term illness you expect to recover from
  • A bed bought for business or commercial use

These are common examples, not a full list. What matters is whether the condition has a long-term, substantial effect on everyday life, which is for you to judge and declare.

How it works

Three steps, a minute of your time

1

Choose your bed

Pick your bed, size and mattress as normal. The price with VAT relief is shown alongside the standard price.

2

Confirm your eligibility

Tick the VAT relief option and complete a short declaration of the qualifying condition. A family member or carer can do this on your behalf.

3

Pay the lower price

The 20 percent comes off your order total. There is nothing to send to HMRC, and nothing further for you to do.

What the relief covers

The saving applies to more than the bed

When you qualify, the relief is applied across the eligible parts of your order, not just the bed itself.

What you are confirming

A short, simple statement

To apply the relief, you confirm your full name and address, the condition that qualifies you, and that the bed is for your own personal or domestic use. That is all.

No medical proof is needed, and you do not have to be registered disabled. We keep your declaration with our records, as the rules require, and we never send it to HMRC.

Eligibility is defined by HMRC under VAT Notice 701/7. Neither we nor HMRC staff can decide whether you personally qualify, so if you are unsure, please speak to us, your GP, or the HMRC VAT Disabled Reliefs Helpline on 0300 123 1073. If you are not eligible, the standard 20 percent VAT applies to your order.

Common questions

VAT relief, answered

Do I need proof or a doctor's letter?

No. You do not need a doctor's letter or any medical evidence. You simply complete a short declaration confirming your condition and that the bed is for your own use.

Do I have to be registered disabled?

No. The relief is not limited to people who are registered disabled, and it is not means tested. What matters is that your condition has a long-term, substantial effect on your everyday activities.

Can I claim for my husband, wife or parent?

Yes. If you are buying the bed for someone who is chronically sick or disabled, for their own use, a family member or carer can complete the declaration on their behalf.

How much will I save?

The 20 percent VAT is removed from the eligible parts of your order, including the bed, delivery and installation. The price with relief is shown alongside the standard price as you shop.

What if I am not sure whether I qualify?

Speak to us and we will talk it through, or contact your GP. For the rules themselves, the HMRC VAT Disabled Reliefs Helpline is 0300 123 1073. We cannot decide eligibility for you, but we are happy to help you understand it.
